TOUR DE NORTH END BIKE RIDE

Rockford's first and only bicycle based "pub crawl" is almost here -- this Saturday June 11, local cyclists will take to the streets of Rockford's North End on two wheels to raise bicycle awareness, encourage safe riding, and have untold amounts of fun.   Oh, sorry, did we mention that it's totally free, and you can win lots of fun prizes?  Well it is, and you can.

With gas prices going through the roof, it's high time that we look to bicycles as a real alternative for day to day transportation.  Rockford's North End is a historic, compact area with an abundance of residential and business property.  With the Route 2 revamp coming in the next few years (complete with a 2 lane, mixed use path from Auburn to Riverside), the North Main district will be a unique, bike-friendly place to live, and encouraging proper riding and safety will become more and more important to our city. 

"Pub crawl" is about as close as we can get to a working title for this event, but proper bike safety and etiquette is a huge focus of the event -- drinking is NOT. In fact, no alcohol consumption is required for participation.   We encourage everyone, from families with young kids, to hipsters on single speed bikes, to our older neighbors on tandems, to pump up their tires, put on their helmets, and patronize North End bars and restaurants this Saturday afternoon while they ride safely (riders will be instructed to obey all rules of the road and ride with respect). 

Schedule:

Sign up at The Olympic Tavern at 1pm & collect your passport, then free ride to as many other locations as you like (Mulligans, North Main Tap, Der Rathskellar, Latham Tap, Whiskey's Roadhouse, and Cliffbreakers), meet other neighborhood cyclists, get your "passport" stamped, and return to The Olympic at 6pm for a grand prize drawing for an ultra hip Fat Tire Cruiser Bike (the more passport stamps, the more entries you get).  Each participating location will have bike-centric giveaways as well.  In case of REALLY bad weather, the Tour De North End will be postponed until a week later, Saturday June 18.
