BYRONFEST STEERING COMMITTEE ANNOUNCES NEW BYRONFEST ROCKS THE ROCK CONCERT

Byron, IL - The ByronFest Steering Committee is excited to announce the new ByronFest Rocks the Rock concert, just in time to celebrate ByronFest's 25th Anniversary. ByronFest Rocks the Rock will be held on Thursday, July 12, 2012 at the Byron Dragway. ByronFest Rocks the Rock, presented by WXRX 104.9FM, will feature rock bands Pop Evil, Nonpoint, Soil, Beyond Threshold, The Last Vegas, and Wayland. Blake Horras, Executive Director of ByronFest said, "The ByronFest Steering Committee is excited to bring, ByronFest Rocks the Rock to the 2012 schedule of events. With ByronFest celebrating 25 years, we thought 2012 would be a great year to welcome a new opportunity and event."

03/21/2012 - "Whiteboy Wasted" EP Review

In addition to pinning Black Lung and Fresco's "Whiteboy Wasted" to the long list of Rockford originals, you can arguably tab it as the best rap album to ever come out of this town, and one of the better-produced albums by newcomers in the whole game.

The EP is produced entirely by Soleternity (@Soleternity), who has worked with Tech N9ne, Bone Crusher, MTV's "Next," ESPN's "And 1," and is producer and creator of the up and coming movie "The High and Mighty."

Before I begin, let's meet the artists:

Black Lung - @BlakeLung
The 21 year-old from Davenport, Iowa is also known as Blake Lung and has already performed in over 70 shows around the country, including five at SXSW. He has completed four independent tours, released six music videos, and charted #16 on the CMJ Top 40 Hip Hop Albums chart with "Tha Me$$ I Made" last May.

Fresco Clean - @FrescoClean
The 22 year-old Rockford native is a globe-trotting battle rapper and hip-hop artist known for his freestyles and being a lady's man. Already somewhat internet famous from all his "Grind Time Now" battles and others from around the world, this is his first official musical release of any kind.

"Whiteboy Wasted" is a seven-track EP released March 15th on iTunes. The album was heavily promoted on Twitter and Facebook in the months prior, so I was eagerly awaiting the release, and I was especially looking forward to the full version of "Stuntin," which you can watch the promo video of below:

Even before I saw the "Stuntin" video, I came across the now controversial "Dope Money" video in which Rockford's status as the "9th Most Dangerous City in America" is exploited through the dropping of violent crime statistics and the donning of jersey-style shirts with "Rockford 9" emblazoned on the chest. Beyond all the hype, the video served its purpose and garnered attention. Whether we like it or not, the statistics are what they are, and if we can use them as a catalyst for producing art and music, I'm all for it. I'll let you judge for yourself:

My first impressions of the album were that the lyrics were genius, the production was clean, and the energy stayed high throughout. It quickly became apparent Fresco and Black Lung are easily able to convey how much fun they're having while performing and still maintain the professionalism and seriousness needed to pull off a solid album.

After a dozen or so rotations, my favorite tracks are "Get Throwed," "Just Like Heaven," "Ballerblock," and "Stuntin," but it's important to note I'm not disappointed with any of them. As I write this, "Dope Money" is blasting through my earbuds, and I may just have to chalk that one up as a favorite as well. For me to have four or five favorites on a seven-track EP is impressive, to say the least. This will definitely be my go-to rap album for the summer.

Overall, "Whiteboy Wasted" is well worth your time, and I highly recommend getting yourself a copy. It has me excited for what these guys and the rest of Borgata Mob have planned for the future, and proud to say they hail from my hometown.

We may live in one of the most violent, miserable and obese cities in the country, but hey...at least we aren't unoriginal.

So often, we see the paparazzi hounding celebrities about the clothes they're wearing or the fad diet they're trying. We decided to "cut to the chaser" and find out what they like to drink. After all, the beverage you choose can say a lot about you (and you can bet we'll cover that in a later blog).

Kate Hudson - Wine & Tequila

Kate had to give up her love affair with these beverages of choice in 2009 to lose weight for "Earthbound." She's quoted as saying, "I love tequila. I love wine. To be in New York for two weeks and not have one beverage?! I'm not sure I've ever done that."

President Obama - Bud Light

Remember the "Beer Summit?" Most people probably can't recall what it was about, but everyone remembers Obama choosing to drink the quintessential blue collar beverage: a Bud Light.

Madonna - Pomegranate Martini

Now known as "The Madonna," this trendy drink tastes as good as it looks. Here's the recipe:

1 1/2 oz. of vodka

1 oz. Pomegranate juice

1 1/2 oz. fresh blackberry puree

1 oz. cranberry juice

Lemon rind

Ice

Combine the ingredients in a shaker half filled with ice. Shake well and serve in martini glasses garnished with a fresh lemon/orange slice.

Eva Mendes - Screwdriver

The go-to drink for everything from a night out to a head cold, Eva professed her love for screwdrivers when admitting to imbibing before shooting a sex scene with Joaquin Phoenix. "I'm very professional and I don't usually drink on the job but that morning I had to have something. It was my first sex scene and thank God James Gray was directing it. He did it at the end of the shoot, so it was the last day and I was really, really comfortable with James and Joaquin."

Vince Vaughn - Vodka Red Bull

Vince is sticking with the hottest drink from a decade ago, the Vodka Red Bull. Some things never change.

Anne Hathaway - Skinnygirl Margarita

We must admit, we'd never heard of it either, but we did find the recipe. If anyone would like to try it and leave a review, please comment below!

1 1/2 oz tequila (100% agave - count 1, 2 while you pour, no need for measuring

1 Splash lime juice (from one freshly squeezed lime)

1 Splash Orange liqueur (Cointreau, Grand Marnier or Triple Sec )

Makes one cocktail. Combine all ingredients over a glass of ice. Garnish with a lime wedge and salt (or sugar) if you'd like.

John Travolta - Bombay Sapphire Martini

Keeping it classy, Travolta prefers libations that match his eye color.

Oprah - Lemondrop Vodka Martini

Arguably the most powerful woman in the world, Oprah shows no weakness when it comes to getting a little tipsy. She even concocted the drink herself! Here's the recipe:

Juice of 6 lemons

4 tablespoons sugar

6 fresh mint leaves

4 shots vodka

Ice in shaker

1 sugar-rimmed martini glass

Mix lemon juice, sugar and vodka in a martini shaker filled with ice. Shake well and pour into sugar-rimmed martini glass. Garnish with mint.

Mary-Kate Olsen - Wine Spritzer

White wine, that is.

Jennifer Aniston - Margarita

Jennifer has admitted on more than one location that she adores Mexican food, and what goes better with a chimichanga than an ice cold margarita?

George W. Bush - Buckler

Former President Bush (of the "W" variety) swore off alcohol at the age of 40. He now satisfies his craving with a Buckler, a non-alcoholic beer brewed by Heineken. He isn't alone on the Buckler bandwagon, though. VP Joe Biden is also a fan.

So, you've gone ahead and done it. You threw back a few too many drinks last night, and now you feel completely shredded. Headaches, nausea, and dizziness are the unfortunate result of too much fun the night before.

While there is no one-size-fits-all cure, here are a few preventions and remedies that may help the next time you tell the bartender to "keep 'em coming."

The Tried and True Method - Keep Drinking

Drink a Bloody Mary. While your blood is dealing with the new alcohol, it ignores the old. The vodka in a Bloody Mary mixes with the alcohol still in your system to provide headache relief, and the high salt content helps you retain water (scientists have deduced that hangovers are mostly caused from dehydration). Additionally, the tomato juice and celery are full of vitamins which aid in replacing or soaking up alcohol molecules in your system. Be careful not to take your new-found well-being as a license to continue drinking.

The Puerto Rican Prevention Method - Lemon in the Armpits

Some Puerto Ricans rub a slice of lemon in the armpit of their drinking arm before they start drinking to stop a hangover before it even starts. In theory, the lemon prevents dehydration, and therefore headaches, because it helps retain fluid.

The Will Power Method - Exercise

Exercising might be the last thing on your mind as you're stumbling to the bathroom and reading last night's texts with one eye shut, but it just may be the only relief you'll get. The idea is to down a liter or two of water and hit the treadmill. Exercise speeds breathing, increases sweat, and moves alcohol-laden blood to the liver and kidneys more quickly. Just remember to STAY HYDRATED, otherwise you'll end up feeling worse!

The Hot & Cold Method - Alternating Shower Temps

A hot shower will raise your body's core temperature, prepping your body for sleep and hopefully bypassing some of the pain associated with headaches and sore muscles. The cold water will have an invigorating effect, helping you feel more alert and less "cotton candy head." This is good if you don't have the privilege of calling in sick.

Foods that Prevent and Cure Hangovers:

• Pickles & pickle juice - very high in electrolytes

• Bananas - high in fructose, potassium, and magnesium

• Honey - high in fructose and potassium

• Eggs - loaded with cystein which counteracts acetaldehyde

Avoid These Like the Plague:

• Caffeine - Resist the urge! Caffeine will only accentuate the effects of dehydration. If you're suffering from caffeine withdrawals, have an espresso, but only after drinking lots of water.

• Acetaminophen (Tylenol) - When your body is busy metabolizing that shot of Tequila, it processes the painkiller differently than it normally would, resulting in toxic compounds that can wreak havoc on your liver.

• Fourth Meal - The idea that stuffing yourself before bed will "soak up" the alcohol is a myth. Food has to already be in your digestive system to slow the absorption of alcohol into your bloodstream, so fill up before you head out. Meals high in fat, like pizza or steak, are your best bets for preventing a hangover the next morning.

In the end, the only real cure for a hangover is time. Your body needs to detox, and rest is your best friend. Hydration is also key, so be sure to drink plenty of water and fruit juice. Until next time...

Rockford’s 2012 Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day has been expanded to include a series of community events. Organizers recently announced the addition of a Diversity Business Luncheon and a College Fair, in addition to the traditional daytime program and evening celebration, and more.

“Rockford will join other cities across the country as we shine a spotlight on diversity and giving back to our community,” said Pastor Herbert Johnson, an organizer of the event. “The theme for the year is Building Bridges, Empowering Individuals, and Strengthening Communities. We feel it is not only fitting for this community but for communities all across the country as we work towards a brighter future.”

LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks are seeking families interested in housing a player for the 2012 season.

This unique experience will allow a family to get to know a player beyond the field and allow them the insight of the player’s everyday life. “My family and I became the first host family for the RiverHawks,” host family coordinator Sally Hoesel said. “We started out hosting to give our then nine year old son a different experience, and it’s now something we look forward to every summer.”

Players may be assigned housing as early as the first week of May. Pending the length of the postseason, players may be in homes as late as mid-September. Host families can enjoy many benefits in exchange for providing room and board: up to four season tickets (depending on household size), a VIP parking pass, a discount card for purchases in the team store, and monthly picnics with the whole team, all exclusive to host families.

Many host families have developed relationships with players that have lasted long beyond the players’ days in Rockford. “We have been blessed with players who have gone on to play in the major leagues, including Jon Garland, Kyle Lohse and Adam Dunn,” Hoesel said. “Regardless of who you host, it is a great feeling to sit in the stands while your player is on the field. You will forever be a part of that person’s life.”

Families unable to host a player for a whole season can host for just spring training from May 1 through 17. For that, families can receive up to four 10-game mini plans. Families interested in the program should contact Hoesel at (815) 871-5245 or at sallyh@rockfordriverhawks.com.

12/31/2011 - Police offering safe rides home for New Year's Eve

If you party a little too hard this New Year's Eve, the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department wants you to call them for a ride home.

The annual program is in its 31st year. Anyone who needs a ride home because they have been drinking too much is asked to call (815) 639-4674. The sheriff's department does ask that you try to find your own designated driver first, before calling them because of the high volume of calls they handle on New Year's Eve.

The rides are available for anyone in Winnebago County from 11:00 p.m. Saturday to 4:00 a.m. Sunday.

After sharing the stage with the likes of Filter, Tonic and Everclear at Freeport's Spirit of Peace & Music Festival, Spectra Recording Artist The Apollo Effect is returning to the area next month for a worthy cause. On December 2nd they take to the stage at 10 pm to perform at a Toys For Tots event at Jumpin' Joe's, at 1100 W. Galena Ave. With the holidays around the corner, the band wanted to take this opportunity to give back to a community that welcomed them with open arms during their first trip to the U.S. in August. According to lead vocalist Brent Lunney "Our experience in Freeport was amazing all around. The people were incredible. Toys For Tots will have drop boxes placed inside the venue for toy donations; however donation is not necessary for admittance to the event. The organization will also make buttons available for purchase for those that prefer to donate monetarily. All donations will be distributed directly to local families in the Stephenson County area.

11/17/2011 - RiverHawks Holiday Camp

LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks will host their Holiday Baseball Camp at Wallbangers Academy in Loves Park from Tuesday, December 27th through Friday, December 30th.

The camp costs only $40 for all three days, and is for kids ages seven through 12. Campers will receive hitting, fielding and pitching instruction from RiverHawks manager Rich Austin and other RiverHawks coaches. Each camper will also get a ticket voucher to a 2012 RiverHawks game.

“This four-day camp is a great opportunity for kids to get in offseason work with a group of professional coaches,” Austin said.

Each camp session begins at 9 a.m. and runs until noon. Campers are to be dropped off at Wallbangers at 8:30 a.m. The registration deadline is Friday, December 23rd at noon.

“The RiverHawks are committed to providing youth baseball players with ways to continue honing their skills through the fall and winter,” director of operations Chris Daleo said. “This camp is just one of many ways the RiverHawks are involved in Rockford’s baseball community.”

Spread some cheer this holiday season! Stop by any of these locations between December 12th-18th, and drop off a new, unwrapped toy ($5-$15 value).

The first Holiday Tweet Drive was planned in only six weeks and grew much quicker than expected. Founder Harrison Kratz initially envisioned ten events, but that number quickly grew to 25 by the beginning of December after beginning the planning process mid-October. With the help of over 70 volunteers around the country, partnerships from brands such as PopChips, Auntie Anne's, and the Yankees' Curtis Granderson, the first Tweet Drive saw over 2,000 collected toys, $7,500 donated to local charities, 1 Mashable article and hundreds of smiles both young and old throughout the holiday season.

Coupled with holiday cheer, social atmospheres, and the warm feeling of giving back to children during the holidays, the Tweet Drive initiative was born and had a strong voice moving forward.

For our 2nd annual Holiday Tweet Drive, we are going global to spread holiday cheer through social media during the week of December 12th through the 18th. Events for the Holiday Tweet Drive are primarily set-up to collect new toys for under-privileged children within each event's local community.

Aside from the charity aspect, our events are all Tweet-ups meant to connect our online communities in an off-line setting. Whether a city has a large turnout or just a small gathering at the local Happy hour hot spot, it is all about community! Our events are built through organizers, champions, and partners all willing to come together for some tweet drivin' and social good.

TOUR DE NORTH END BIKE RIDE
June 11, 2011

Rockford's first and only bicycle based "pub crawl" is almost here -- this Saturday June 11, local cyclists will take to the streets of Rockford's North End on two wheels to raise bicycle awareness, encourage safe riding, and have untold amounts of fun. Oh, sorry, did we mention that it's totally free, and you can win lots of fun prizes? Well it is, and you can.

With gas prices going through the roof, it's high time that we look to bicycles as a real alternative for day to day transportation. Rockford's North End is a historic, compact area with an abundance of residential and business property. With the Route 2 revamp coming in the next few years (complete with a 2 lane, mixed use path from Auburn to Riverside), the North Main district will be a unique, bike-friendly place to live, and encouraging proper riding and safety will become more and more important to our city.

"Pub crawl" is about as close as we can get to a working title for this event, but proper bike safety and etiquette is a huge focus of the event -- drinking is NOT. In fact, no alcohol consumption is required for participation. We encourage everyone, from families with young kids, to hipsters on single speed bikes, to our older neighbors on tandems, to pump up their tires, put on their helmets, and patronize North End bars and restaurants this Saturday afternoon while they ride safely (riders will be instructed to obey all rules of the road and ride with respect).

Schedule:

Sign up at The Olympic Tavern at 1pm & collect your passport, then free ride to as many other locations as you like (Mulligans, North Main Tap, Der Rathskellar, Latham Tap, Whiskey's Roadhouse, and Cliffbreakers), meet other neighborhood cyclists, get your "passport" stamped, and return to The Olympic at 6pm for a grand prize drawing for an ultra hip Fat Tire Cruiser Bike (the more passport stamps, the more entries you get). Each participating location will have bike-centric giveaways as well. In case of REALLY bad weather, the Tour De North End will be postponed until a week later, Saturday June 18.

ROCKFORD, Ill. - Rockford AirFest 2011 today announced that the U.S. Navy Blue Angels have canceled their headline performance.

However, the show will continue June 4 and 5 at Chicago Rockford International Airport (RFD) with a full slate of military and civilian performers and a variety of other activities.

The Blue Angels, the U.S. Navy's high-performance aerobatic squadron, is under a "safety stand-down" imposed following a lower-than-normal maneuver at an airshow earlier this month. The team announced today that the stand-down has forced them to cancel their appearance at Rockford AirFest.

"We are disappointed that the Blue Angels cannot attend Rockford AirFest," said Bharat Puri, chairman of the Greater Rockford Airport Authority board of commissioners "However, this is what makes this patriotic group of individuals the best of the best: they take the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of their team as well as their fans. We wish they could be with us next weekend, but look forward to having them perform at Rockford AirFest in a future year."

Rockford AirFest 2011 will still feature two military air demonstration teams, plus U.S. Army Golden Knights, the U.S. Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon and other performers. Rockford AirFest will also feature a record 60 static aircraft for viewing and tours and a wide range of children's activities and interactive displays.

"Rockford AirFest will still be an exciting weekend of great air and ground activities for the whole family to enjoy," Puri said. "Our theme of 'Honoring Heroes,' which is tied to the Centennial of Naval Aviation, will continue as we celebrate our everyday heroes as well."

Advance tickets for Rockford AirFest 2011 are on sale for $10 per adult and $5 for youth 5-12. Kids 4 and under get in for free. Tickets are available only at FlyRFD.com, at the RFD terminal and at Rockford-area Culver's and Riverside Community Bank locations.

Literally.

Weather permitting, we're reserving the outdoor deck at The Olympic Tavern on Monday night for dog lovers.

Our goals are to:
•Create a regular event to raise money for our local off leash dog park and other animal charities,
•Increase awareness and membership at Canine Corners,
•Encourage responsible pet ownership,
•Get local dog lovers outside, active, and meeting new people,
•Have a lot of fun in the process.

Rules & Formalities:
*All dogs must enter through the side deck door, not through the restaurant (per health code).
*Dogs must remain on-leash.
*Rules are pretty much the same as the dog park:

*you are responsible for your dog, & you are responsible for cleaning up your dog’s waste,
*no unfixed males, females in heat, or puppies under 4 months,
*your dog must be under your control at all times -- unruly or aggressive dogs will be asked to leave,

The Olympic Tavern will donate $.25 per pint of beer sold on the event day to Canine Corners, Rockford's off-leash dog parks, and we hope to plan them frequently throughout the summer.

04/26/2011 - Rockford to Host Cabela's Fishing Tourney

The Rockford Region catches a whopper of a tournament; the Rockford Area Convention & Visitors Bureau announced today the community will host a Cabela's King Kat Fishing Tournament. The national catfish tournament will take place June 25, 2011 and is one of 15 King Kat Trail fishing events taking place this summer. Sportscore One will serve as the home base for the tournament, with anglers fishing in the Rock River. This is the first time in recent history the region has hosted a fishing event of this caliber.

Cabela's, the sporting goods retail giant, coordinates the King Kat Trail. The trail of tournaments is a series of affordable fishing tournaments taking place around the country.

"A national tournament of this caliber establishes the Rockford Region as a fishing destination and will make the region a contender for similar events in the future," said RACVB President/CEO John Groh. "Our community is fortunate to have some amazing natural assets including the Rock, Pecatonica, Kishwaukee, and Sugar Rivers. This tournament provides a unique opportunity for us to showcase our region to anglers nationally, regionally and here at home."

The tournament will draw nearly 700 anglers and fans from around the Midwest and other parts of the country. They will fill 450 hotel room nights and generate an estimated $80,000 for local businesses. The entry fee is $200 for a team of two. In an effort to encourage family involvement, teams are allowed a third person if that person is under the age of 16 or over 65.

The event in Rockford includes a kids' tournament for those 12 years old and younger. The King Kat Kids event will also take place at Sportscore One on the Rock River and works to encourage an appreciation of rivers and lakes and the sport of fishing among youth. The kids' tournament is free.

Reeling in the event took hard work, according to RACVB Vice President of Sales and Marketing Monica Krysztopa. "Our staff initially met the event organizers at the Connect tradeshow in August of 2010. They cultivated a relationship and invited them to visit our community to see for themselves the wonderful assets the Rockford Region could offer their tournament. They took event organizers on a pre-dawn tour of possible locations."

I just had my fourth and last assessment with B-Xtreme Fitness, and the results are more than satisfying. My weight went from 224lbs to 217lbs. I thought I would have lost 40lbs when I first started, but quickly learned from Niki that shouldn't be my focus. After this last assessment, I have learned, because of the type of training I did, I was building muscle along with burning fat. Based on that I am proud to say that I have lost a total of 3 1/2" around my stomach, 1" around my hips, and the same around my thighs. I also gained 1" around my arms. Welcome to the gun show! LOL.

I had also learned how important it is to change your diet. Diet played a huge roll in losing the inches. Now that I have done this for 4 1/2 months, I have developed a craving for eating better, and for working out. It is a MUST, to losing weight, that you should focus 80% of your training to your diet. You still need to get off the couch and work out or get some cardio in each day to make the combination complete.

The first month was fun, I was getting fed tons of information, learning new life style changes, and working out. The second month was tougher. At this point they knew how hard they could push me, and had a clearer view on which direction I needed to go. The third month kind of felt like I had flat lined on my progress, but through heavier training and more cardio, I was able to get the results I wanted by the fourth month, which was tons of compliments. I love compliments!!! LOL.

At this point we have decided to continue my training on my own at home, with frequent check-ins. I am going to be starting softball, coaching my daughters team, and a few other spring and summer activities. B-Xtreme is also going to be going through some changes also, with the possibility of a new location, due to growth they are gaining with new customers. It will be fun to work out at home with my family, riding our bikes together, and my all time favorite - hiking in the woods for delicious wild mushrooms and wild berries - our family tradition.

Changes.

I've received many texts, emails, FB messages, and tweets in regards to what's going on... and I feel now is good time to somewhat explain what's going on.

In 2004, I put serious thought into pursuing a job in radio, April 1st, 2004 was my first day. Honestly, I never imagined making a career out of it. It was something I just always wanted to do and it sounded like a ton of fun. Through the years I've met all kinds of people, some interesting, some "different", some have become some of my best friends. I've experienced so much at 97ZOK, more than I could have ever learned by going to college for radio.

One thing I've learned in the last 4 years or so, radio is a constantly evolving business. I've seen the good, the bad, and the ugly. The reason behind this blog is not bad or ugly. A recent programming change was made at 97ZOK last week which meant I would vacate my time-slot in order for the new plans to fall in place. This was non-negotiable. Before anyone jumps to conclusion, this has nothing to do with someone I did or didn't do. Cumulus does value me as an employee and a person.

In fact, a very important person came to Rockford to personally offer me a full time position in a bigger market, unfortunately this means I will be relocating to Indianapolis, IN. With my son and the rest of my family and friends being here in Rockford, I'll be visiting quite often. I won't lie, the last few days have been hard... an emotional roller coaster, but I have to make money and I have to work. Staying here and working part time is not a realistic option. But who says I won't be back? Starting April 11th I'll be the Indy producer for "The Bert Show" out of Atlanta. I can honestly say it looks like I'll fit in perfectly at I94. (By the way, my last day on air was April 1st, 2011. Weird?)

Promise me this, do not say you're going to boycott 97ZOK for the changes, believe me... the staff had NOTHING to do with this. They are my family and have families to support. Instead, embrace the change and continue to love the station as hundreds of thousands of people have done for years.

HCC's baseball and softball program has a strong history in Northern Winnebago County. Our baseball players currently play at HCC's 32-acre Sports Complex on Forest Hills Road. Fifteen diamonds are available for youth ages 4 through 16 (age as of 1/1/11).

03/01/2011 - "Weighed Wade" Blog #13

My third assessment was today, and the results were good. I lost 1 1/2" around my stomach since the last assessment. Yay! My body fat also went down 2%, and I gained 1/2" in my arms.

They have really stepped it up for me over the last couple of weeks. Just when I get comfortable with what I'm doing, they come in and turn it up. Because my weight has not changed much, but I am obviously losing body fat and inches, they are going to tweak my routines a bit to add in more circuit training and more cardio. I have showed them that, because of my chemistry, I can build muscle fast, so they want to back that off a little to make room for more fat burning exercises.

Niki swears to me that the biggest battle still lies with in my diet. I have been learning how important it is to stay with certain foods and how much I eat at one time. My body has become very alert to what I eat these days. If I do sneak something that I am not supposed to eat, my body lets me know.

All in all, I am pretty happy with where I am at. I do wish I was losing it faster, but Niki stressed to me, I am doing everything at a healthier level.

Tad's on the Rock has already informed me they are going to be doing a hot body contest Memorial Day weekend. Hmmm.....Maybe, just maybe, I could be a contestant...............

I might just stick to being a judge.

Back by popular demand! Here I am, alive and doing well!

I have to apologize, though, for not posting a blog. I have been extremely busy getting everything ready for Hullabaloo. If you don't know what that is, it’s our first ever Entertainment Expo. We have partnered up with Franchesco's to put on the best (and only) Entertainment Expo Rockford has ever seen. Bands, Vendors, Sampling, Bartender Wars, and much more. Busy, busy, busy I be!

On that note, I will talk about that being the only challenge I really have when doing the B-Xtreme Fitness Challenge. Because I have been so busy, it makes it really hard to keep up with my diet calendar. I'm constantly on the go, so I grab food here and there. Not necessarily at fast food places, that would be a no-no, but with calorie counting and mixing of proteins and grains. I just have not been keeping the balance. The cool thing about it is your body will tell on you. Not only do I feel it, but my trainers see it. There is no fooling the B-Xtreme Team.

I got myself back on track the last couple of weeks with eating right. Now, I'm getting pumped up for my next evaluation in a couple more weeks. I'm looking forward to seeing results. I have had people tell me they see a difference, which gets me very excited.

I have noticed, and so have my trainers, that my strength has gone up, and I am also noticing a little more definition in my arms and legs. The biggest part I can't wait to shed off, is my famous beer gut. I used to be able to rest a can on it, but I can't anymore. Even though it still seems big to me, everyone else says it’s going down. Say good bye 6-pack of beer, and hello 6-pack of abs!

We are still on track to reach my goal by Memorial Day weekend, where I hope to feel good about taking my shirt off while on the river, mowing the lawn, swimming with my family, and at Wrigley Field when I paint "Go Cubs Go!" on my chest.

Facebook is a great place not only to catch up with old friends, keep in touch with close friends, and even make new ones, but it's also good for sharing your thoughts & opinions freely. Things like posting a status, writing on someone's wall, making a note, and creating a "group" centered on any thought or opinion are some of the things that make Facebook so great. This also serves well for businesses, too. The only downfall is negative comments.

Local radio stations with Facebook fan pages offer their listeners different ways of interacting with the station. Q98.5's Mark Charvat is the primary moderator of Q98.5's fan page and has the page set to a "Just Q98.5" setting, which only allows the visitor to comment on the station's post and the posts only automatically appear when someone visits the page. "Just Others" is a great way to be able to avoid the possibility of someone writing a negative or offensive post on a fan page's wall. Another radio station, 97ZOK, allows their fans to write on their wall and allow it to appear on their page automatically. The station's DJs feel it makes their fan page more personal and interactive. The 97ZOK fan page is frequently updated enough that an admin can quickly remove a posting if needed, although it's rarely a necessary action.

Another business that is continuously sharing tid-bits to its fan page is Rockford Night Out. Rockford Night Out shares information about local bars, restaurants, nightlife, and other events that can also be found on RNO's website. Katie Dorland, Founder/Web Administrator of RNO, had this to say about negative posts on their fan page:

"These situations are relatively rare, and I deal with them in two ways. The first is proactive, and I'm really, REALLY careful about what and how I post. For the most part, I stay informative. Starting controversial discussions is good for "business," but not being able to say what I really want to say in responses just frustrates me. I try to keep RockfordNightOut neutral and positive on almost all topics."

No matter what the fan page is about - a band, a business, or whatever, it's a great way to reach out a never-ending, instantly-connected world. Just be smart about how a fan page is moderated and run, and this FREE tool can spread the word. Remember this, "word of mouth" is no longer the fastest form of advertisement.

ROCKFORD - It's time to dust off that colorful Hawaiian shirt and that straw sunhat because Denis Knuth, President of the Northern Illinois Parrot Head Club (NIPHC) announced recently they will be holding their 11^th Annual Island Beach Bash on Saturday, February 26^th at Giovanni's at 610 N. Bell School Rd from 6pm to Midnight.

Money raised from the Beach Bash goes to the Northwestern Illinois Special Olympics. Last year $16,000 was raised with 650 Parrot Headers dancing the night away with tropical rock music by Pirates Over 40. This year the Bash will be featuring two bands, Pirates Over 40 along with Johnny Russler and the Beach Bum Band. Tropical crooner Tony Amber will open the event at 6:00pm.

According to Knuth there will be cheeseburgers, chips and your favorite adult beverages available to purchase. The event will also feature a 50/50 raffle, a silent auction with many fun baskets of goodies, plus a raffle for some outstanding prizes.

"We have groups that come in on buses from as far away as Peoria and Springfield for this event," Knuth added. "If you're a fan of Jimmy Buffett and the tropical lifestyle, then you'll love this fun break from the wintertime blues."

Tickets to the event are only $10 person in advance or $15 at the door. Tickets will be available at Giovanni's or Oscar's Pub & Grill, 5980 E. State St. and at Kobyco Windows and Doors, 4131 N. Perryville, Loves Park starting January 10^th.

In the link provided below, you will find an iPetition for extending Sunday liquor license hours in Rockford and Winnebago County. Alderman Lenny Jacobsen has asked the "Codes and Regulations" committee to consider extending Sunday hours from 8:00am to 2:00am. The current hours are 11:00am to midnight.

It makes no sense that bars and restaurants can be open to serve from 6:00am to 2:00am every day of the week except for Sunday. Extending the hours would allow restaurants and/or bars (who wish to open early) to serve alcohol just as all the private clubs are allowed to do, and also extend business two extra hours in the evening.

There are many businesses that want the hours extended, and the more signatures the better.

R.I.P Vern, you will be highly missed, but always in our hearts.

Vern made a huge impact in my life about 16 years ago. I was playing in a band called Ichabod, and we would frequently play at the old Billy and Earls, and Irish Rose. Vern would always make his way over to see us. We used to talk for hours about bands and music. Vern always had great taste in music and would even support new, young bands that would come into the Rockford music scene.

Last time I saw Vern was during this past fall's Groove Walk. I ran into him at Bar 3 where one of our favorite bands was playing - Too Deep. Jam packed, wall to wall, I found him all the way in the back sitting by himself. I was supposed to be making my rounds, as one of the sponsors of Groove Walk, but realized I needed the world to stop for awhile to spend time with Vern, knowing about his condition.

Same conversation as usual, not missing a step in date, bands, and venues he had been to over many years. I spent a half hour with him, wish it had been more. He will be highly missed! My heart, On the Waterfront, Harlan, Too Deep, Stone Free, and many other shows will not be the same and will always have a void - a spot that is Vern's.

I say to everyone he touched, the next time you are at a show, that you know Vern would have been at, get up front, right where Vern would have been, and just dance. Dance for one minute for Vern.

Love and miss you Vern.

I'm even more motivated to go work out this morning.

Yesterday was my second assessment, and I was very happy to hear the news.

It started with getting weighed. I was not happy with that at all. I was 221 lbs. When I started, I was 223 lbs. Then, I went down to 218 lbs. Niki quickly explained why. Not only am I burning fat, but I am also building muscle mass. With the next few assessments, it all came into focus.

The next test was to see where my body fat percentage was at. Before, it was 25.2%, now it's at 23%, so I thought that was good news. I also lost 1" in my waist and hips.

The next test was my strength test. I did 60 crunches in a minute and 42 push ups in a minute. Before it was 41 crunches in a minute, and 31 push ups in 51 seconds.

Over all, I am on track and they are very happy with my results for only putting in a good honest five weeks since I started.

The coolest part is people noticing my changes.

Out of Context (Pt.1)

How convenient, easy, and quick has communicating become with BBM, email, Facebook statuses, instant messaging, and twitter? You can literally share any thought instantly with anyone with a few clicks of some keys. Think about this, if you have one thought every 15 seconds and you sleep 8 hours each night. That equates to 240 thoughts per minute, 14,400 thoughts per hour and 230,000 thoughts per day. That's a whole lot of thoughts we're just dying to share. For most of us, especially me, we're sharing these thoughts like they're going outta style. We do this with friends, family, and acquaintances too, which is "over communication" and can create a problem which is the premises behind this blog.

All these quick and easy messaging techniques have really taken away from the way we've communicated for centuries. Even when the telephone was invented in 1876 until like fifteen years ago, we shared our thoughts without being face-to-face and without confusion or misinterpretation. However, the world is now full of mass confusion and leaves us all to assume the tone behind fonts. If you think about it, no matter what the text says it can easily be taken out of context. All these ways of sharing thoughts without even so much as opening our mouths has made us lazier and lazier. It seems like we went from writing complete sentences in letters and eventually emails to short cutting even the simple way of talking. Pay attention to your texts, BBM's, emails, and tweets, and see how lazy people are. No more completing sentences with periods, no more spelling out entire words, and my favorite thing "..."! Those three little dots, those periods, those former stop signs at the end of a sentence, and we're all guilty of doing it. We do this to show a trailing thought or maybe a way no having an answer, or even to show annoyance/anger/etc.

Another thing people do is read into a sentence too much or too little, especially when you think you know the person who sent the message you're reading. I am INCREDIBLY guilty of this. I don't feel alone though, in fact I know I'm not the only one. Imagine all the drama created by someone taking a simple message out of context. Let's say it is a complete simple sentence, no trailing dots, no CAPS, and everything is right there in front of you. The chances of you misinterpreting the message are quite high. All these things could really be avoided by making a simple phone call. If you're like me, you don't want to be on the phone, you'd rather text. You know you're lazy, right?! Chill out, I am too. But, how can we fix this? Is it possible? Are we as a generation so sucked into technology that and finding the fastest way to talk to one another has brought upon a problem we can't change? Here's an idea that even I'm going to try. Let's make a point to send complete thoughts but make sure we proof read. If you look at the text and see that it could be confusing, send a text saying you're going to call the person and ELABORATE your thought rather than creating unnecessary confusion. Give it a shot.

01/07/2011 - "Weighed Wade" Blog #10

It's been a while, but I'm still here!

Started the new year off with a new workout program! After careful evaluations, Niki is making me step it up and lock in my weekly goals, monthly goals, and long term goals.

The first month was basically 'getting acquainted' month - learning all the cycles to working out, getting to know my trainers, and getting comfortable with my new lifestyle. Not so fast........they don't believe in getting comfortable.

After evaluating me the first month, they are now able to set my goals, and know how hard to push me. When you get comfortable with it, they turn it up!

I am actually at the point of craving it. I feel good. I really feel good about everything. I feel like I am in control of my life. It is so nice to have discipline back in order,

So, my goals are not to miss one class and keep eating right. Whoever knew that egg whites, cottage cheese, shaved turkey, and a little pepper would be my new favorite breakfast. Our goal for me losing weight is going to be 10-15lbs per month from now through May. Wish me luck!!!

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The 2011 Cubs Caravan roster has been announced and will include Manager Mike Quade, Dave Otto, Randy Bush, Sean Marshall, Andrew Cashner, Koyie Hill, Chris Archer, Jay Jackson, Lester Strod and Mark Riggins.

Tickets are available for the Caravan which will be in Rockford Wednesday, January 12 at the Flodin Boys & Girls Club located at 1000 Mill Road.

The event will begin at 5:00 PM with doors opening at 4:30 PM. Each person attending the Caravan will be given a ticket that will indicate the 2 players whose autograph they can receive. This policy has been set by the Chicago Cubs and will be enforced.

Following the 45-minute autograph session, the program will begin promptly at 6:00 PM. The program will include an overview of the upcoming season, a question and answer segment with the Cubs players and managers. A ball park dinner will be served which will include hot dogs, chips, and soft drink.

Tickets are $25 and are available at the Boys & Girls Club Administration office at 1040 N. 2nd Street from 9 AM-3:30 PM Monday-Thursday and 9 AM -12 noon Friday. Phone orders will be taken until January 7 with Visa and Mastercard or at the Flodin Unit from 3 - 6 PM. Tickets are limited.

The Top 10 TWO FACES of 2010

(In no particular order)

My list is not in any particular order per say but Ke$ha will be at the top. She had a huge impact on the music world and on pop culture in 2010. She had good pictures and bad pictures, and by bad I mean NSFW, but I'm torn on her level of hotness. I can't decide if she's hot or not. One day there's hideous pics, the next there's pics that make me stop and say "Holy (profanity)!"...

Lady Gaga is not as questionable as Ke$ha. Gaga would be quite attractive if she stopped dressing like the love child of Cher and Elton John...

Every "Top 10 of 2010" should include Lindsay Lohan no matter what. She's been all over the news and has drugs and alcohol issues that even Dr. Drew doesn't want to even attempt to fix. I've always found her attractive except as a blonde... a blonde that is passed out with her mouth open in the passenger seat...

Pink, how I love you. She was single for about 3 minutes after taking a break from her husband ~~Corey~~ Carey Hart. She wrote songs about it and bashed him in a few of them but soon they reconciled and shortly thereafter announced her pregnancy to the world. What's with her Bieber haircut?...

Fergie Ferg. The Peas had another giant year in 2010. It wasn't hard finding pictures of Fergie both hot and not-so-much. She's easily a two face, I'll even go as far as to call her a butterface. Her body is banging, no doubt. My friend Steve said it best, "When you come across a hot picture of her [Fergie] it is HOT!" Duh.

Chelsea Handler is a must for this list. Although I'm not always amused by her and sometimes I'm annoyed by her voice, but she's been known to look hot in 2010. As you can see below, she's also a two face. She's managed to grab the attention of 50 Cent though. Go Fiddy, it's your birthday.

Do you know who this chick is? Natalie Horler, the voice behind CASCADA. I've seen her in concert and liked what I saw, the music was so-so. Based on the pics below, is this even the same chick? I think there was a Google error.

Brooke Hogan... the thing about Brooke Bollea is that one day she'll look like her mom. Woof woof, brother.

I was running out of ideas and then I came across Kirsten Dunst. Kirsten Dunst is pretty as long as she doesn't have blonde hair. No offense to the blondes, I'm one of you.

YOU'RE RIGHT! Snooki shouldn't be on this list. I just wanted to point out that the fact that an imaginery computer animated cartoon character is more attractive than she is.

12/20/2010 - "Weighed Wade" Blog #9

Today was another tough day at B-Xtreme, but I was very motivated because Niki let me get on the scale. I lost 5 1/2 pounds! I am so happy. I have been feeling a lot better, but was not sure that I was losing weight yet.

I am into my third week of actual weight training with cardio too. Today, I got to do some more of Jacob's Ladder (check out the video) three sets, one minute each. Looks easy, but its not. In between each set, I had to do "plank holds." Not very fun either. Niki explains in the video why I had to do those.

I might sound like a cry baby when I talk about my workouts, but the bottom line is, they are tough for me. I am totally out of shape and have been for too long. That's why its hard for me. I don't want to discourage people from making the first step towards working out and getting in shape. By all means, DO IT! The B-Xtreme staff are the best for this. I can not stress this enough! They are very wise and GREAT to work with. I encourage you to stop in and check out all they have to offer.

Today I am going to talk to you all about Nina, Niki's mom. She's another trainer - a tall slender, blonde haired lady, that is soft spoken, but don't let that ever fool you if you go to B-Xtreme Fitness.

Oh yeah, she brought the pain! Yesterday was the beginning of my third week, and we did back and triceps weight training. Unfortunately, I got the privilege of some more pain. Nina (the soft-spoken drill sergeant) had me do an exercise called the "Truck Driver." What I had to do was put my back against the wall and slide down into a sitting position, like I was sitting in a chair, but there was no chair to sit on. Once I was in the proper position, I had to hold a round 10 pound weight straight out in front of me, and turn it back and forth like a steering wheel. I had to do three sets of this for one minute each. Sounds easy? You try it!

That was not all. Another one was called "Shoulder Scissors." While standing, I had to hold three-pound weights in each hand out in front of me with my elbows slightly bent, and move my arms back and forth across each other for a minute each set. OUCH! was the word that described that!

Don't get me wrong, Nina is a very nice and very smart lady. I just never thought she could cause so much pain.

OK, so I am going into three weeks of doing this. How do I feel? I feel great already! I don't look it yet, but I am feeling good. I noticed my new habits are really kicking in, and I noticed my face looks a little leaner. As far as the rest of my body, mostly my gut, I have not noticed a change yet. I am not upset, and don't expect to see a difference for another three weeks. I am very happy I have made the decision to do this.

House of Tunes (H.O.T.) to open soon!

"There's nothing to do in Rockford."

If you've ever lived in Rockford, IL you've probably said this more than once. You may have even agreed after reading the title of this blog. If this is true for you, shut your trap. Realistically there is plenty to do in the fine city of Rockford, IL but you must be open-minded and open-eyed to find ways to entertain yourself. Music, art, "culture," museums, restaurants, and nightlife can be found throughout the entire city. "Nightlife" is debatable at times, but fine websites like RockfordNightOut.com keep you up-to-date with what's happening all over town.

The thing I'm sure everyone can agree upon is the music/entertainment in this city. Let's be honest, the only things that sell out the MetroCentre are country music, rodeos, and sometimes professional wrestling. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying there's anything wrong with those three things, I can find a way to enjoy all three, but when it comes to Rockford not everyone is like me. "Rockford" wants to be a mini Chicago but there is only one Chicago. I think what "Rockford" wants is Today's Best Music. Just kidding, I figured I would throw that in there. Seriously though, Rockford wants entertainment diversity. It seems like the same acts are stopping in Rockford year after year, national or regional. This is all fine and dandy, I've made some great friends through shows like these, however let's mix it up. Easier said than done. It takes a diehard fan to travel deep into the heart of an unfamiliar city to see a concert. Most of our decent venues are in downtown Rockford which is fine for us and these venues are awesome in their own way, but if you're not from Rockford, that trip down State Street can seem like an eternity. It's been said over and over and over again that we need something on the east side of town, near I-90, and I'll certainly agree.

Finally, someone is putting their money where their mouth is and wants to heat things up! "They" want to spice it up; make it hot, if you will. Hell, they want Rockford to be renamed HOTford! The people behind that old awesome venue in Poplar Grove have decided it's time to take a trip down 76 (or 173) and take it to Rockford. Chubby Rain House of Tunes closed its doors, took down all the visiting bands merch, countless beers merch, and put away all those signed guitars, and sat back to collect their thoughts. No doubt there were a few beverages that went along with the thought process, but "the Guide" and his crew came up with a master plan and are ready to get the ball rolling. H.O.T. Rockford will be a bar/restaurant, state of the art nightclub, merchandise/box office, and a LIVE MUSIC VENUE. By the way, this will all be an environmentally friendly atmosphere that will be loved by visitors, music fans, and bands as well. [See the layout at the bottom of this blog.] Aside from everything just mentioned, toss in a tattoo parlor and a fully equipped professional production studio with a green room to accomadate live acts as if they were at the Grammy's. Now you've got yourself a helluva attraction. This 30,000sqft venue can hold up to 2,000 people in one location. Get ready for a party! Check back for more updates about H.O.T. Rockford because I'm guessing this won't be the last time I talk about them.

This morning's work out was called, "Pain!"

Not much to say about that, just PAIN!

I walked in to work out with one of the other trainers, Stephanie. She said that we were going to work on legs. She did not know that I have not done biceps and chest yet, so with a little begging, I got what I wanted, and then some. I have always been proud of my chest and bicep workouts in the past, but not today.

Stephanie had me doing things I never thought of. I literally had to open my eyes wide and look around the room to make sure I was at B-Xtreme Fitness once in a while, because at some points I thought I was in some torture chamber in some third world country.

I told you guys about the machine called Eli (elliptical). Well, today I met Jacob (Jacob's Latter machine) "Pure Hell" is what that should be called. Imagine a 45 degree incline with a latter in it that moves down every time you step on it. You have to keep up with stepping to the next one before the last rung disappears. Two minutes was all, but it felt like two years in hell!

Ok, off the record,

I learned more about this program this weekend. I believe it's a good thing. In my quest for physical health, I am also looking to be mentally healthy, and a lot of that requires me to NOT be so hateful towards people, to be more forgiving, and to accept people even if I don't understand. I believe it's another step towards maturity for me. I learned about this campaign watching "Running Russell Simmons" (great show by the way.) Rockford, IL December 11, 2010-The Rockford Rage is introducing their new team of all-stars: The Rockford Rag Dolls. They will be battling it out against near by Quad City Rollers for their first bout on Saturday, December 11, 2010 at the Indoor Sports Center, 8800 E. Riverside Blvd, Loves Park, IL.

Doors open at 6pm and derby action starts at 7pm. A portion of the evening's proceeds go to benefit the Loves Park Fire Department. We will be collecting new, unused, unwrapped toys for any child, infant or teenager. So please bring a toy donation. After bout party in the SkyBox.

The league is run by the skaters, referees and other support staff, all who are volunteers within the organization.

12/01/2010 - "Weighed Wade" Blog #6

I learned a couple things today at B-Xtreme Fitness: Don't wear any Chicago Bears clothes, and don't miss a class. Yes, I did both.

Yesterday I was supposed to come in for cardio, but I didn't make it. The deal was, I could choose to do cardio at home or come in to B-Xtreme. I opted to come in, so I couldn't back out. Well, I didn't even make it in. When I came in today, I was all mentally prepared to do some upper body weight training. Unfortunately, that's not what Niki had in mind. Because of missing yesterdays assignment, plus wearing a Bears t-shirt, I got punished. 40 minutes on Eli (elliptical). Niki is a Packers fan.

All I remember was different phases of doubt, guilt, hatred, Bears going to the Super bowl, and an acute feeling of nausea and dizziness. OK, I'm exaggerating a bit about the Bears. Anywho, If I had to rate today's work out, it would be right up there with pulling teeth, a prostate exam, and the Bears losing to the Packers.

Cardio is obviously going to be the hard part of all this, but I just need to keep concentrating on the end result. I did, however, find away to defeat the slow clock and the monotonous view of the room. I closed my eyes and started to concentrate on my breathing, and after I got comfortable I started into an almost meditative type of trance, and then envisioned my end result.

I was thinking about stuff like: how I would feel at beach next summer, hanging out on a boat, maybe even entering into some kind of hot body competition. OK, a bit far-fetched. Or not...we shall see. Before I knew it, 20 minutes had gone by. At this point, I noticed my heart rate was up, I was going faster, and I was sweating. After the next 5 minutes, Niki asked if I needed a towel. I said I would prefer a stretcher. She was very thoughtful and just brought me a water and a towel. I then proceeded to tell her she might want to call the bomb squad also, because I thought my heart was going to explode!

All in all, I made it. The drive back home was a little tingly, and I felt like electricity was pulsing through me, but I did feel great mentally knowing that I accomplished something good.

Facebook Relationship Status: Is it ruining it's true meaning?

The Facebook relationship status seems to be an important part of world we currently live in, but why is it so important and doesn't it have true meaning? After researching the true definitions of "Single" and "In a relationship" my thoughts/opinion may now be invalid. I'm still going to continue with this blog.

Let's first review the definitions of the two most important terms in a Facebook relationship status.

Single: unmarried; not married or related to the unmarried state.

Relationship: A connection between persons by blood or marriage. ~~A sexual involvement; affair.~~

One thing I learned from my friend Jordan while doing the bouquet/garter toss at a wedding is that if you're not married you're single, which is technically true. By definition if you were married and got divorced and since haven't remarried you are unmarried or divorced. Maybe people don't post that on their Facebook status because they're ashamed or embarrassed or simply don't think it's anyone else's business. The last part of that sentence is opposite the reason of this blog. People abuse and misuse the Facebook relationship status all the time. In fact, this blog is almost like part two of my "Facebook Status No-No's".

I think it's funny how quickly people jump to Facebook to "inform" their friends of their "life changes." (I use the term "life changes" very loosely.) Let's be honest, the minute you change your relationship status you have to know it's going to stir up the social media "world." Actually, that's what you're probably hoping for: attention. I have friends on my 'fb' that change their relationship status quite often, and honestly I get some sort of sick joy out of it reading about it, I'm not gonna lie. If it wasn't changing so frequently, I probably wouldn't even notice, but such is not the case.

We all have someone on our Facebook with this habit. Habit is a good word to describe it. "Hey, I like this person and they like me." Ok, now let's run to Facebook so that eeeeevvvvveeeerrrrryyyyyone will know the new love you share. Unless someone is really creepy or really nosey no one cares about your "relationship," it's true. How did these people function before social media? Did AOL profiles have a "relationship" option? I can't really remember. Did these people call up everyone they know and just bust out "so yeah ____ and I are in a relationship?" I doubt it. The problem is the social media overshare, and this is coming for a guy that tweets about everything and anything. There is a term "private life" for a reason.

I recently read a great blog about Facebook relationship statuses ruining dating [which you can read here] but I think it's ruining not only the dating world but also the true meaning of being in a relationship. Obviously if you're married, you're married. If you're engaged, you're engaged. Then there's "being in a relationship." You may genuinely want people to know you're proud of being someone's significant other and vice versa, but I'm going to say the latter of the people just want the attention.

I'm beginning to think we're all social media attention fiends. But seriously, at one point is it okay to change a status from "single" to "in a relationship." I think new couples, fresh dating, "talking," and people that are "seeing" someone should just keep it their relationship status at "single." Are people that insecure of themselves or the situation that they need to have their status say that they aren't single? Do people have the kind of friends that think "Oh, look who's single! I better jump on it!" Doubt it.

I would say the range of time in which it's okay to change your status if you're not married and not engaged would be six months to a year. That seems like a fair amount of time, but not a day, a week, or a month - that's kind of quick. You're just asking to jinx things by jumping the gun, in my opinion. Certainly there are circumstances that differ and could debate this blog, but they're rare.

Bottom line is the first sentence of this paragraph: "Facebook Relationship Status is ruining the real meaning of a being in a relationship." It's not an advertisement, it's not a billboard, it's not an ad in the yellow pages. One would assume it was meant for REAL relationships. Then again, it's Facebook. By the way, if it's complicated it's not a relationship. If you change your relationship status you should expect comments or "likes" and don't cry or complain when people abuse that status with rude or insensitive remarks when your "relationship" started a few weeks ago. Stop oversharing and changing your relationship status left and right. It's ruining the term "relationship."

Remember this, you're either single, engaged, married, or divorced - it's as simple as that.

11/26/2010 - "Weighed Wade" Blog #1

It's the day before I change my lifestyle. Our friends at B-Xtreme Fitness have agreed to transform me, and I have agreed to make it public.

You will be able to follow my progress on RockfordNightOut.com. I will be posting weekly blogs, pictures, and videos. I'm going to inform you of my new diet that they will construct for me, the daily work outs, and most importantly, how I feel about the whole thing.

Why, you ask? Well, I am tired of the way I look. I'm tired of how I feel when I walk up a flight of stairs, and most importantly, I am at that age where I am becoming very concerned with my health. That might happen earlier for some, but I am there now. At the age of 36, I am 5'10", and last I checked about a month ago, I was 225lbs.

My goal: To be happy and confident. I am going to let B-Xtreme decide the rest. Lose 10 lbs, 20 lbs, 30 - 50 lbs, as long as I look good, feel good, and know I am healthier than I was, it works for me.

I was totally motivated when I saw the owners of B-Xtreme Fitness transform themselves. Niki used to be my banker many moons ago, and I have seen her transform herself over the last few years, but most recently, the one that hit me the most, was the transformation of her husband, Don. Five months and 50lbs later, he just recently entered his first competition and won 2^nd place in one division and 3^rd in another.

Now, that's what motivates me! I don't want to do competitions at this point, but I do want to look and feel good.

Saturday night, I had my last beer, and my last fast food meal - for awhile, anyway. I am both excited to finally do this, and nervous also, mainly because I thought it would be best to go public with it. Not only so you all can see the great things B-Xtreme can do, but also to make me accountable for starting this. All weekend, I received both support and discouragement from people, but I know once I make my mind up, I can do anything I want!

11/26/2010 - "Weighed Wade" Blog #2

I'm back at home now. I just got done with my first day at B-Xtreme Fitness. It was almost like going into the Dr. for a physical, but without all the uncomfortable things.

Today was more or less an assessment of my body. I had my blood pressure taken, motion and joints assessed, flexibility checked, heart rate observed, measurements taken, and a strength test done. The scary part was my blood pressure, which was 149 over 96. I was very worried, but didn't see Niki running over to the phone to dial 911. I did feel a little winded after 12 minutes on the treadmill and after push-ups and crunches. Each were timed on how many I could do in a minute. I was able to do 31 push-ups and 41 crunches.

So, the goal today was to find out where I'm at health wise, and how hard they can push me. Basically from what Niki said, I'm going to get my ass kicked!

Tomorrow morning is my next session, and I am going to learn proper form when using free weights.

Also, Niki would like everyone to know B-Xtreme Fitness is open to the public on Thanksgiving morning from 8- 9, and they are going to go over all the different classes they offer, so bring your gym shoes and sweats, and get ready for a work out!

Day 2 of Weighed Wade:

Today started out easy. I met another trainer, and she showed me proper form when lifting weights, and proper stretching. It was pretty easy until I opened my big mouth. "Hey Niki, since I still have time, do you want me to do any cardio?" 20 minutes later, the elliptical machine that has the name of "Eli" had kicked my ass. My legs felt like Gumby's legs, and had a hard time walking out to the car. To some, that might be an easy machine, but to someone that has never been on one, not fun!

Tonight is the night I am going to need a lot of self control and support. It's the biggest night for going out, and I can't have any beer. The plan is to go see the IceHogs. We have already been asked to hang out with friends, and there's a lot of other stuff going on, too (just look on RockfordNightOut.com). It's going to be tough, but if I can get through tonight, the rest should be easy.

Well, it's Thursday night, and I am proud to say I avoided having any beer while I cooked the turkey on the grill.

I started the morning by spraying down the turkey in the sink and mixing my secret rub. I let the rub set in the skin of the bird and fired up the grill. As I stood by the grill, the overwhelming feeling of something missing consumed me. I am missing something. My hand felt lonely. My mouth is thirsty for it, and my koozie sits on the shelf. I find myself pacing all around the garage and the house. I flip on the TV to start watching football and the feeling grows stronger. I really would like a beer!

It is nice to say, I fought it off. I did however, enjoy one of the best birds I have ever grilled. It was so juicy and tasty. I managed to keep my portions small, and I did allow myself a piece of apple pie. Hey, tomorrow is when I get my nutrition plan from Niki at B-Xtreme, so I had to indulge a little. After all, I did fight off the urge to have a few beers.

I actually can't wait to go in tomorrow and work out.

Today I got my meal schedule, and what I can and cannot eat. I learned about glycemic levels and what foods can spike high sugar levels, and ones that slowly release, or maintain throughout the day.

The interesting foods, I actually can't wait to try, are bison or buffalo. I'm a huge meat eater, and it sucked to find out I couldn't have any red meat or pork. Well, I can, but it's not recommended. I also learned there are other great meats out there that are a lot leaner to eat such as venison and ostrich. Think about it, those animals run, but pigs and cows just sit all day.

I also got my schedule for working out and cardio training. My next week is jam-packed with activity, so I guess that's when it officially begins. At that point, I will just blog about it once a week, or if needed. I will be posting some videos and pictures, so please stay tuned for more "Weighed Wade."

I also found a great substitute for beer. It's called water, and it happens to be one of the ingredients in beer. Imagine that! Even though I do miss the hops, water doesn't give me a hangover.

I just want to say thanks for all the support you all have been giving me. It means a lot. I also want to thank my business partner for officially making my face an official cheesy ad. LOL.

10/28/2010 - Wade's Words

As I sat and watched our video of the day, like I do every morning, it reminded me of how much potential we all have.

The "Video of The Day" was of these amazing people doing amazing stunts. As I sat and watched it, I thought about all the amazing things we can all do, or have done. Not just with amazing physical stunts, but also with our minds, and I strongly believe it starts with our minds. It starts with believing. If you don't believe, it won't happen. Think about it. Remember not getting the grade, a raise, a check, a special someone. Remember if you had any doubt. One ounce of doubt, and you can pretty much kiss it goodbye.

Everyone knows someone that just gets "lucky" every time they buy a scratch off ticket, and they end up winning. What do we say when we buy one? "Oh, why bother", "I never win. I'm not lucky," "This is just a waste of money," but the man, or woman, that always gets "lucky" has a different thought or thoughts on it. Ever notice their attitude towards it? They smile, they have confidence, they're happy even when they don't win. I see them sometimes talk about having gratitude towards their life. "I don't really need the money, I'm happy with my life." I strongly believe this is a key ingredient to "Believing."

When I'm playing pool, I measure how much confidence I have in the shot. I can either believe I can make it, or I can believe some reasoning of doubt in the shot. Any ounce of doubt, I can miss the shot. All confidence = believing = shot made every time. I use this method a lot when it comes to life. I ask myself in situations, "How much confidence do I have?" "How much do I believe?" "Am I grateful for what I have?"

Doubt creates negative feelings. Negative attracts negative. Gratitude or believing creates positive feelings. Positive attracts positive. That's the only way! I believe we are hard wired to "Create" in this world by the simple method of positive and negative attractions. Try it! Go out there and "Believe." Change something at home, work, with a loved one, or even yourself. Go out and challenge yourself. Create something! You don't need to be a carpenter to build a home - just use your mind and believe.

Find something you really desire. Imagine what it would be like if you already had it. Think about all the positive feelings that brings to you. Now, go out there and get it!

The Social Network

Based on the development on Facebook and directed by the same director as 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' and 'Fight Club,' this is the movie of the year. If you don't know the story behind Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook don't worry about it, this movie pretty much lays it all out there for ya. "The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding Of Facebook, A Tale of Sex, Money, Genius, and Betrayal" is a good book to read before or after seeing 'The Social Network,' especially since the same writer for the book wrote the movie as well. The way the story is laid out before you is pretty smart. You'll understand that if you watch it. I'll try not to spoil it too much, I'll try my damndest.

We start with a sour end of a relationship which leads to the mixer of a 'journal' and beer, that's never a good idea. Brutal honestly mixed with emotion and beer creates a "just-for-fun" website. This website leads to a huge amount of hits in a short time, leading to controversy and hurt feelings. After the wide spread "fame" of the website, Zuckerberg has an idea that requires a specific algorithm that only one person can figure out. Long story short in the middle comes the idea of 'the facebook,' after the initial success of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg and his best friend have an encounter with a previous internet entrepreneur which ultimately has a negative effect in Zuckerberg's life. This leads to the main plot(s) of the movie and more. Hopefully I didn't spoil it too much.

The acting in this movie was phenomenal. Every bit of it was believable and felt like you were actually watching the actual events take place. I'll be honest and say that I wasn't a big fan of Jesse Eisenberg in 'Adventureland,' and was 50/50 about his role in 'Zombieland' I also wasn't sure how well Justin Timberlake would be in the role of Napster creator .Sean Parker . I was wrong about both. These two stole the movie. Of course there are many other great actors and actresses in this movie, but the two that stand out to me the most were Jesse Eisenberg and Justin Timberlake. I'm sure my hunger for pop culture had something to do with that.

Regardless, Eisenberg's look, characteristics, and attitude seem as if that is how the real Mark Zuckerberg carries himself in day-to-day life. Eisenberg's quick wit, use of big words, and almost monotone responses make it seem believable that he really is the man behind Facebook. It makes me think there is a "Mark Zuckerberg" type person in all of our circle of friends, the kind of guy that is smart, kind of funny, but lays low - not needing to be the center of attention.

On the other side of the coin is Justin Timberlake's role as Sean Parker. We all remember using napster and how great is was, for the most part, and all the drama that ensued with the music industry, and the lawsuits that came shortly thereafter. 'The Social Network' makes Sean Parker look like a scheister, as I like to say. (Urban Dictionary definition: someone who is a cheat, often in legal terms.) If you live under a rock and walk into this movie not knowing who Justin Timberlake is you would probably leave hating him, based on the character alone. His role as Sean Parker comes off scheming, slimy, d bag, conniving, hipster kind of guy. Let's face it, we all know someone like this. Back to the movie - Facebook comes shortly after the fall out of Napster. Being as how Sean Parker seems to know what works are far as "internet success," he and Mark Zuckerberg end up meeting with Parker over dinner and get to know each other while Parker share all sorts of tips. Mark Zuckerberg's bff/CFO is none too happy about this, ultimately leading to one of the main story-lines of the movie.

Even if you don't have Facebook (if that's even possible) please watch this movie - and then immediately join Facebook, just don't invite me to join your mafia or ask for fertilizer. Definitely one of the best movies on 2010! I would be surprised if this movie doesn't earn multiple Oscars. Don't listen to the critics, because if movie reviews decide whether or not you will see a movie, you're going to pass on something interesting, inspirational, and an overall good film. Yes, I said "interesting" and "inspirational" - there are many definitions to each word depending on the person. I have yet to meet a person that has watched this movie and not enjoyed it. Maybe Nick Digilio, he likes weird movies. If you're skeptical, just go see it in a few weeks at during a matinee.

The Social Network gets 4.5 stars from me.

IceHogs win preseason opener in shootout

Rockford, Ill.- The Rockford IceHogs picked away at an early deficit to edge out the Peoria Rivermen, 5-4 in a shootout at the Rockford MetroCentre to open the preseason on Tuesday night.

With less than one minute remaining in the third period, IceHogs winger Zach Torquato tied the score at 4-4 with his second marker on the night. Torquato's goal at 19:02 was set up by Dallas Jackson and Dustin Cameron.

The IceHogs held down the defense late in the overtime period, killing off a bench minor and forcing the deciding shootout.

In the shootout the IceHogs outscored the Rivermen 3-2 to claim the win. Torquato, Brandon Pirri and Brandon Bollig notched shootout goals on Peoria net minder Gerald Colman. Peoria received goals from Tyler Shattock and Jerad Stewart.

While the IceHogs battled late to get the victory, Peoria controlled the scoring early.

Peoria got on the board first as Mark Isherwood found the back of the net at 6:01 on the power play in the first period. Shattock and Phil McRae were credited with the assists.

Later in the opening frame, IceHogs goalie Joe Palmer came out to play the puck but couldn't clear it out of the Rockford zone. Matt McIlvane picked up the loose puck and slapped it in to put the Rivermen up 2-0 at 6:26.

The IceHogs responded with a power-play goal of their own to cut the lead to 2-1 at 7:17. Cameron found Torquato camped out in front of the net and he chipped in his first marker. Pirri was also credited with an assist.

Peoria winger Pierce Norton picked up his second point of the night, his first goal, as he extended the Rivermen lead to 3-1. Ryan Palmer found Norton streaking towards the net and he put it off the cross bar and past Palmer at 11:01.

With Peoria on the advantage in the second period, Chris DiDomenico stick handled past a Rivermen defender and netted his first goal of the game to bring the IceHogs within a goal at 3-2 at 7:34. Jonathan Carlsson factored in with an assist.

Pirri cleaned up a rebound off of a shot from winger DiDomenico, 50 seconds into the third period to tie the game at 3.

Peoria, however, fired back with a power-play goal from Stewart, assisted by Ethan Cox and Mark Cundari at 3:20 of the third period.

Danny Battachio earned the win in goal for Rockford, making 13 saves in nearly 33 minutes of work. Palmer started for Rockford and stopped 15 of 18 Rivermen shots. Coleman went the distance for Peoria and blocked 26 IceHogs shots.

Rockford finished the night 1-5 on the power play, while the Rivermen went 2-11.

Rockford College presents "The Robber Bridegroom,” a musical by Alfred Uhry, October 7 to 10 in the college’s Maddox Theatre. Performances are set for 7:30 p.m. Thursday – Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

A rousing, bawdy Southern fairy tale set in 18th century Mississippi, "The Robber Bridegroom” is the story of the courting of Rosamund, the only daughter of the richest planter in the country, by Jamie Lockhart, a rascally robber of the woods.

The proceedings go awry, thanks to an unconventional case of double-mistaken identity. Throw in an evil stepmother intent on Rosamund’s demise, her pea-brained henchman and a hostile talking head-in-a-trunk, and you have the recipe for a rollicking country romp.

Crustacean Records is overjoyed to announce the newest addition to its stable of musical talent, The Pimps. The band formed in Rockford, IL in 1997 and after honing their chops in Midwestern clubs they gained a fanbase that made national labels take notice. They were signed by Disney subsidiary Hollywood Records in 2000 for a two album contract worth $1 million.

The Pimps were promised no censorship and full creative control, but when they delivered the first of the two contracted albums, More Songs About Drugs With Curse Words, the suits at Disney balked at releasing it. The Pimps were dropped in 2001, but this major label tale has an oddly happy ending that allowed the Pimps to walk away from the label with $600,000 of their contract.

Beyond that the Pimps has other claims to fame, or at very least infamy, including having songs on major movie soundtracks for Mission Impossible 2 and Crazy Beautiful as well as having a song featured on the long running NBC drama Third Watch. Also noteworthy was the series of cease and desist letters from the Goodyear corporation that forced the band to change their name from the more imaginative and less misogynistic moniker of the Goodyear Pimps.

Despite their positive and negative brushes with the corporate world, the Pimps have remained independent. They spent their $600,000 payment from Hollywood Records to buy their own apartment building in Rockford that serves as living quarters for all the band members as well as housing the Pimps' office and recording studio. They have achieved the noble goal of completely avoiding day jobs by investing their money wisely and keeping up a schedule of 160 shows a year during the entire decade mainly playing 2 or 3 day strings of weekend shows to fans throughout the Midwest.

Crustacean Records will reissue the newest Pimp's album Fuck This Shit We're Outta Here on Tuesday October 12. The Pimps will be recording and releasing a new studio album in 2011 on Crustacean Records. The pairing of the two long standing, independent and popular musical entities makes tremendous sense. According to the Pimps guitarist and lead singer Stu Johnson, "We're super duper awesome happy to be in bed with Crusty Records. They're nice guys and because they're from Wisconsin they really know how to drink. The only drawback is that they're Packer fans."

ROCKFORD - Rockford will have a new professional basketball team when the American Basketball Association starts its 2011-12 season.

The owners said they hope it catches on and stays as long as the last one did.

"We are so glad to have the opportunity to bring basketball back to Rockford. We looked at how well the Lightning did, and we wanted in," said Leon Smith, co-owner of the franchise along with Alvin Pitts and Melvin Smith. "I went to Lightning games as a kid, and I remember all the players. To me it was a big thing.

"I want that for Rockford again."

At times, the community supported the Rockford Lightning of the Continental Basketball Association until the team folded in 2006, ending a 20-year stint. Rockford's new franchise joins what ABA Commissioner Joe Newman calls "the fastest-growing sports league in the world." The ABA is in its 10th year and will have 60 teams next season.

"I followed the CBA Rockford team, and the way it was conducted, it was the shining star of that league. I'm delighted to have Rockford joining us," Newman said. "The reason why we will not end up like the CBA did is because we have a very aggressive business model. We pay as much attention to what goes on off the court as we do to what goes on on it. We integrate entertainment into the sports world, and we concentrate on the fans and the community."

Smith, the owner of Babbage's Computer Solutions in Rockford and the head basketball coach at Keith Country Day High School, along with his partners, has begun the process of forming the team. A name will be chosen by fans, a website will be designed, a general manager and coach will be hired, and the roster will begin to materialize soon.

He said he's already been contacted by several former high-profile players from the area, and he insists there is plenty of talent still in the area, or willing to migrate here, to make this a competitive team quickly.

"With the talent from this area alone, we can compete. We plan to utilize the Rockford talent right away, and then go from there," Smith said. "And this is just a sports town. We think it will support a good basketball team, and make some of these players really want to play for this team.

"We're getting the buzz going, and we're going to bring this thing to life."

While Newman said there have been ABA players who have moved up to the NBADL or moved on to play internationally, he added that is not the main goal of the league. His focus is on keeping the league not only afloat, but growing.

"The mission of the ABA is to continue to provide good, quality basketball and good entertainment to the community for an affordable price," Newman said. "We really work closely with our communities. And Rockford is certainly going to help.

"I couldn't be more delighted about the new owners, and to be in Rockford."

To say "Rockford rocks" would be little too obvious, but in a lot of ways this sometimes overlooked city of more than 150,000 people does just that. It's widely known for two gardens, the Anderson Japanese Gardens and the Klehm Arboretum and Botanic Garden, as well as its children's museum, but the city has a variety of cultural and recreational offerings.

Things to do:

Anderson Japanese Garden, 318 Spring Creek Road, is a meticulously designed version of the real thing, intended to relax and at the same time inspire visitors. It was created by John Anderson, who visited Japan shortly after his graduation from the University of Wisconsin. Years later he was inspired to build the garden on land around a spring-fed pond. The 150-acre Klehm Arboretum and Garden includes an amazing variety, everything from a children's garden with two waterfalls and a fish pool to a prehistoric garden, featuring plants that thrived in the Jurassic period more than 145 million years ago. Rock Cut State Park just northeast of the city has more than 3,000 acres and two lakes, one for boating and fishing and one for swimming. The park got its name from blasting operations in the 1800s to cut a railroad route through the area. There are miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking or horseback riding. There is no charge for admission to the park, although there are fees for some activities such as swimming ($3 per person). You’ll find a range of price tags on the thousands of items that will be for sale at the Greenwich Village Art Fair on the Rockford Art Museum grounds Saturday and Sunday.

Some will cost a few dollars; others, hundreds of dollars.

It’s not a sure bet, but you can try your luck at acquiring a piece of art you might not otherwise splurge for via the 2010 Art Raffle.

Cost is $5 per ticket, or three for $10. Buy them at the art museum at 711 N. Main St., J.R. Kortman Center for Design at 107 N. Main St., and at the fair. Drawing will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday. Ticketholders do not need to be present to win.

The artwork being raffled has been provided by the artists who made the pieces. Proceeds benefit the art museum.

Art — and a lot more
About 120 artists from across the nation will exhibit this year. But food, music and other activities are a highlight of the fundraiser for the Rockford Art Museum.

Fine art — Works include paintings, prints and drawings, sculpture, glass, ceramics, textiles, jewelry, photography.

Food — Teas, dips and cheeses will be available for purchase. Made-to-order sweet and savory crepes will be available from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. And from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, individually prepared omelets with fruit and champagne or coffee will be available.

Drink — Wine, signature martinis and cocktails will be available at the Kortman Gallery Point Bar. Wine, champagne and gourmet coffee will be at the Rock River Times Wine Bar.

Review: Fast, funny ‘Underpants’ opens season

It’s perfectly obvious why an aging poet, a Jewish barber and the king of Germany fall in love with Louise Maske, a young Düsseldorf housewife married to a stodgy government clerk — and it’s not because her bloomers fell off while she was watching a parade.

Erin Spears portrays this central character in Steve Martin’s “The Underpants,” the opening production of the seventh Artists’ Ensemble Theater season, and she is absolutely enchanting. Her mobile face expresses innocence and wonder and concern and delight and more with a vivacity that makes the ridiculous premise of this adapted German stage piece almost completely believable.

Her husband, Theo, brusquely executed by Stephen F. Vrtol III, has long since decided how wives — even those as attractive as his own — should behave, and he pompously pronounces his predilections to all, whether they want to listen or not.

Theo also hides another predilection — which he unveils to Gertrude Deuter, the upstairs tenant lustily portrayed by Margaret Raether — that is a bit predictable but still hilarious. Gertrude exults vicariously in the delights she wishes for the lovely Louise and connives with her to make them come true.

And then there are the renters, both drawn by their view of Louise’s “accident” at the royal parade. Will Clinger pushes the poet Frank Versati, in his opera cape and feathered hat, right up to the top but manages to keep him from sliding over. David A. Gingerich, as the barber driven by jealousy, displays a range of physical humor that approaches the incredible.

John Chase is a third would-be roomer, one who did not observe Louise’s public shame, whose timidity is as extreme as the temerity of his counterparts. He’s silly, but he’s fun.

Last but not least is Michael Palmenderi as the unexpected visitor, a fun fillip at the conclusion of this morality tale.

Director Richard Raether keeps the play moving at an excellent pace, working the Martinesque humor very effectively and eliciting a solid ensemble performance from the cast. The off-kilter aspects of the script get a boost from the off-kilter set design by Angelo O’Dierno, and Genny Bonavia’s costumes add to the flavor.

This is not a production for kids because of some rather ribald situations, and it does require a willingness to listen and enjoy the situation as much as the lines — but it offers laughs throughout. “The Underpants” runs through Sept. 26 in Cheek Theatre of Clark Arts Center on the Rockford College campus. Tinker Swiss Cottage a gem

Gardens were as important to the inhabitants of Tinker Swiss Cottage as the inside of the cottage itself.

Robert Tinker, who built the home in southwest Rockford in 1865, not only landscaped the grounds with trees, vines, winding pathways and flower beds. He also built a small conservatory in which he grew tropical plants like those he had enjoyed while growing up in Hawaii.

His first wife, Mary Manny, lived across the creek. Soon, their homes and their hearts were connected by a suspension bridge and elaborate gardens on both sides of the creek. Mary's favorite flowers were peonies.

Tinker's second wife, Jessie, loved irises. She grew them and bred new varieties, often winning awards in iris shows in the early 1900s. She and son, Ted, would take irises into Chicago to sell at markets. In 1915, she held an iris show at the cottage to raise money for the Rockford Children's Home.

The staff at the Tinker museum has worked hard to re-create the kinds of gardens and flower beds the Tinkers had and now, thanks to a local man named Mike Diventi, the Swiss Cottage will feature some of the most elaborate and interesting iris beds in northern Illinois. Diventi has given Tinker his collection of thousands of iris plants, consisting of 123 varieties of historic irises.

Some, said Tinker director Beverly Broyles, go way back. The Florentina has roots in the 1500s; another named Germanicus dates to 1753.

"They are in many different colors," Broyles said. "Oranges with a hint of lavender in the beard, striking bright yellows, beautiful purples, and even some interesting combinations of salmon and deep purple. One, called Blackout, is very nearly black."

Tinker has the irises planted temporarily in some holding beds. This winter, a group of iris experts will meet to plan where and how the irises should be planted to best show them off.

"We want this to be a real tribute to Jessie Tinker and to Mike," Broyles said.

It's an important and wonderful way to add to the authenticity of the Tinker site.

Staff and volunteers have worked hard to restore the grounds around the unique cottage in recent years. A prairie is being planted in an area where the Tinker's cows used to graze. In front of the cottage is a circular rose bed with heritage rose plants, which the Tinkers had in the early 1900s.

And work has been done to re-create the elaborate Railroad Gardens Robert Tinker planted on the creek bank.

The history story to be learned at the cottage has become more than the tale of Robert Tinker, a former mayor, founder of the Park District, landscaper and industrialist. And it's more than the cottage, with its parquet floors, ornate woodwork and two-story octagonal library with a one-of-a-kind winding staircase. The cottage still contains the furnishings and utensils of the Tinkers, showing exactly what their lives were like in the latter part of the 1800s and early part of the 1900s. It's also a look at how people used and enjoyed their gardens for beauty, relaxation and food.

The whole package, Broyles said, is a wonderful way to display history for all ages.

Tinker hopes to do more of that every year, of course. While the museum is struggling, like other nonprofits, through these depressing economic times, it is looking ahead and moving forward.

Hopes are high for a $25,000 grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. In a contest called "This Place Matters," the nonprofit getting the most votes will get the grant. As of midweek, Tinker was in second place.

Rockford, Ill.- The Rockford IceHogs, in conjunction with the American Hockey League, announced the team’s 2010-11 regular season schedule on Wednesday. The IceHogs 80-game regular season will begin on Saturday, Oct. 9 at 4:35 p.m. against the Manitoba Moose at the Rockford MetroCentre and will conclude on Sunday April 10 at 3 p.m. in Chicago against the Wolves.

The upcoming slate of games includes 25 Friday and Saturday home dates at the MetroCentre, three Sunday games and 12 mid-week contests. The IceHogs will host two kids’ day games on Monday, Jan. 17 (3:05 p.m. vs. San Antonio) and Monday, Feb. 21 (2:05 p.m. vs. Peoria). They will also play a kids’ day game on the road on Thursday Dec. 2 (11:05 a.m. at Houston).

Rockford’s longest homestand spans from Wednesday, Dec. 8 through Sunday, Dec. 26 in which the IceHogs will play seven games at the MetroCentre. The team will embark on its longest road trip, a seven-game, five-city swing, from Sunday, Feb. 27 to Friday, March 11.

All Friday and Saturday games at the MetroCentre will begin at 7:05 p.m. with the exception of the season opener on Oct. 9, which starts at 4:35 p.m. All mid-week games in 2010-11 will start at 6:35 p.m. excluding the two Monday kids’ day games. Doors to the MetroCentre will open one hour prior to face off for all games.

If you haven't yet seen "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World," get out to a theater and check it out. It's great eye candy up on the big screen.

While it's a great treat for your eyes, it's equally as pleasing to your ears as well. The movie's soundtrack boasts such acts as the Rolling Stones, Beck, T. Rex and Broken Social Scene. Some of this collection of music is presented to you in the movie by various fictitious bands.

Real-life band behind the band: Beck

Sounds like: White Stripes, No Age or Jon Spencer Blues Explosion

What we know: This gritty band, which (kind-of) includes Scott Pilgrim practices in a small living room. While its members wait for their big break, some lack confidence in the band and themselves. Their sound is rough, but somewhat beautiful at the same time. They have a small following consisting of family, friends and Knives Chau, their biggest fan.

Crash and The Boys

Real-life band behind the band: The actors that play Crash and The Boys

Sounds like: The Germs as a sissy emo band.

What we know: This three-piece band is far from imaginative. Not even much thought was out into their name. Their songs are short, angry and usually just have lyrics that are the song title repeated several times. Kind of reminds you of angst-ridden kids who are playing their instruments for the first time. They suck and they don't care. They also hate you, so please die.

Clash At Demonhead

Real-life band behind the band: Metric

Sounds like: No Doubt meets Evanescence.

What we know: This is the one band from Scott Pilgrim's world that has made it big. Unfortunately the lead singer also is his ex-girlfriend. Their look is as polished as their sleek sound. You can find their posters and albums at your local music store. The band recently finished up a tour with The Pixies. A headlining tour is surely in the cards following a search for a new bass player.

Katayanagi Twins

Real-life band behind the band: N/A

Sounds like: Crappy club DJs that you only think sound good after five mojitos.

What we know: They're twins and they both dated Ramona. The Katayanagi brothers don't say much, but they are far from silent. Their two turntables may not come with a microphone, but they are equipped with a massive stack of mind-blowing amps that are ready to tear the roof off Canada's finest clubs.

Why do people post personal messages and other crap on Facebook? The original purpose of this feature was to allow users to inform their friends of their current "status" (i.e. their current feelings, whereabouts or actions). I think "current feelings" is even a bit of a stretch, especially when some people abuse their status updates with t.m.i., too much information.

Acceptable Statuses:

"Safe and sound in Louisiana!"

"Off to work."

Unacceptable Statuses:

"new ## hit me up if yu aint got it,...jus dun take it personal if I dun give it to yu,cuz if yu associate with c ,YU AINT GETTIN IT".

"0MG! iM S000000 HUNGRYYYY AND i LiTERALLY HAVE N0 F00D iN MY H0USE. iM GUNNA HAVE T0 G0 T0 TAC0 BELL."

Other unacceptable statuses include topics about your relationships, family problems, work issues, or failing at life in general.

Seriously, use English and not ghetto garbage. Complete sentences and grammar is also greatly appreciated. More importantly, most people don't care to know every detail of your life. Keep your personal woes personal. Save the pity party for your diary. For the people that post these types of statuses, is there some sort of goal or agenda you're trying to accomplish? Complaining about the opposite sex isn't going to change the issue, it's only going to show that you're generalizing the sex based on an experience, which only makes you look dumb.

I think people post these b.s. statuses to attract attention or hope their status will be seen by a specific individual. Also, don't "like" your own status, that's just dumb. Obviously you like it or you wouldn't have posted it. If you post a status, no matter what the subject is, it's open for being made fun of. Unfortunately even sensitive subjects like illness and death statuses could result as the butt end of a joke. Don't get all mad at me or say that I'm insensitive to that stuff, 90% I'm not the kind of person to throw in a joke that could be considered inappropriate.

Some people thrive on making jokes at the wrong time. [See lamebook.com for examples.] However I have no problem with making jokes about break-ups, job loss, bodily injury, bad close-ups of someone's face, or simply just to make fun of you. I never claimed I was nice.

Games:
Even though I'm guilty of this, your game scores don't qualify as a valid Facebook status. If you play games on Facebook that's your perogative, but I don't care about your farm, poker chips, fake pet, mafia, or restaurant needs. Who actually has time to "achieve" these goals. "Hey look, he needs fertilizer and farm feed. Maybe I should waste an hour and help him out." Nope, not gonna happen.

Too many statuses/Fan Pages
How about the people that post a thousand statuses a day. I was once guilty of this, and that's why I created a "fan" page. Although Facebook fan pages are intended for bands, businesses, and "public figures", if you post a million things a day, just pretend you're important and create a fan page. That's the best way to avoid spamming your "friends" with pointless statuses. If you choose to "Like" a fan page, don't complain about the number of statuses that are posted in a day. You're choosing to "like" the page, I doubt someone is putting a gun to your head and saying "Like the effin' page, maggot!" I have friends that complain about the amount of posts on my fan page. To them I say, shut your trap.

Solution:
A perfect alternative to posting to all of these Facebook crimes is Twitter. This 140 character microblog provides you the space to do whatever you want, except post nudity. Your followers are willingly choosing to see your updates and should be well aware of the fact that you're probably going to post tons of useless blabber for their enjoyment. Use it, thanks.

Clock Tower to host "Blues Around the Clock" Aug. 7

The vibrant Rockford-area festival season will be even more exciting for more music fans this year. The Blues Around the Clock festival is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 7, on the grounds of the Clock Tower Resort. Seven bands, including headliner W.C. Clark, mentor to the late Stevie Ray Vaughan, are slated to play the 12-hour event.

The festival will run 11 a.m. to 11. p.m. In the event of severe weather, the show will be brought inside the 10,000-square-foot banquet facility. Clock Tower officials hope Blues Around the Clock will attract fans from throughout the region and bring business to area establishments, including the resort's lounges, restaurants and indoor water park.

"This will be full of a lot of stars and full of a lot of fun," Clock Tower Executive Chef and Food and Beverage Director Randall Smith said. "In picking the date, we tried to spread it out between the other things going on in Rockford that are exciting, so the entire summer is filled with events (that) continue to create energy in Rockford."

Special room rates and packages will be available during the event. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the gate. Children younger than 10 are admitted free. Advanced tickets can be purchased by calling the Clock Tower at (815) 229-4572 or at the Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery.

Musicians from Moby to Phoenix understand that one of the most effective ways to get your music in front of a large audience these days is via TV commercials. Especially ones that have hey-you-gotta-see-this YouTube appeal.

Even fake bands do well. Case in point: You've seen the FreeCreditReport.com band, right? The pirate hats? The Renaissance fair? Funny stuff, but that was a band manufactured (and lip-syncing) for the ad campaign. The next one will be real. And maybe from Illinois. The Poets Dance, a rock band from Rockford, is one of four finalists vying for your vote this summer to be the next band hawking credit services.

To help launch the new FreeCreditScore.com, the Experian company -- which provides personal credit information for free once consumers have signed up for a paid credit-monitoring service -- conducted a nationwide talent search.

"The original band campaign started with a jingle I wrote three years ago in my basement," says Dave Muhlenfeld of the Martin Agency, which has produced the ads for Experian. "FreeCredit Score.com is a slightly different product, so we thought we'd bring in a new band, a band of actual musicians instead of people lip-syncing to session recordings. ... Each recording [in this new campaign] keeps the sonic characteristics and personality of the bands."

That's what attracted the Poets Dance to the project. The agency contacted the young musicians and asked them to audition at the House of Blues.

"Our manager asked us almost joking: 'So you guys wanna try to be the new Free Credit Score band?' " says the band's Jarrett Kimberly. "Once we were satisfied that it was something that wasn't asking us to be something that wasn't us, we were like, 'Yeah, sure, why not?' "

This summer, the band found itself in Los Angeles in the same studio where "We Are the World" was recorded in 1985. They laid down their 30-second tune for the ad, then bumped into Eddie Van Halen in the hall.

"They have a really cool sound," Muhlenfeld says of the Poets Dance, which features two synthesizer players. "It's like Boys Like Girls or the Killers."

The band survived an initial online voting to be one of four finalists, with New York's I Love Monsters, L.A.'s Evolove and Detroit's the Victorious Secrets. (Three Chicago bands -- Helicopters, BC and the Personnel -- were semifinalists.) Voting on the four videos continues until Aug. 9 at FreeCreditScore.com.

Annual corn boil serves up thousands of ears each year

ROCKFORD — Last weekend, Brat Days was the big food deal around here.

This Sunday, from 3 to 6:30 p.m., it’s sweet corn, at the Aldersgate Corn Boil at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 4055 N. Rockton Ave., Rockford.

And we’re talking lots of it. Last year, 10,800 ears of corn were served, said Wendy Gloor, church secretary.

About 2,000 people are served each year at the event that has been a fundraiser for the church’s programs, scholarships and charities for more than 40 years.

The corn boil — held rain or shine — typically nets between $4,000 and $5,000, Gloor said. It is one of the church’s two major fundraisers, bringing in about as much as its March rummage sale, she said.

The church gets the bicolored corn locally from Gensler Gardens, Gloor said. About three dozen ears are boiled at one time in one of three wood-fired kettles.

The cost of $6, or $7 the day of the event, but just $2 for ages 7 and younger, starts you off with two ears of corn. It’s an all-the-corn-on-the-cob-you-can-eat affair, though.

Plus, you get a hot dog, dessert and drink.

“It’s really an old-fashioned atmosphere,” Gloor said.

Oh, and is the corn dipped in butter or margarine? “Butter!” Gloor said. “It’s dripping with butter.”

Rockford, Ill. - On the Waterfront, Inc. announced today that the female singer-songwriter and guitarist, Orianthi, has canceled her appearance on the second half of Adam Lambert's Glam Nation Tour which will come to Rockford Saturday, September 4, 2010. On the Waterfront has replaced her performance with the 2009 American Idol singer Allison Iraheta.

The 18 year old Iraheta was one of the final four on season 8 of the cutthroat singing competition American Idol. ROCKFORD, IL -Rockford's own Coronado Performing Arts Center can officially claim the title of the Top Wonder of the United States. The majestic theater in downtown Rockford was the top vote-getter overall in an online contest by AOL and the U.S. Travel Association, receiving more than 6,500 votes. A last-minute rally by fans and an organized push through social media by RACVB helped move the Coronado to first place.

RACVB nominated the Coronado as an architectural wonder last May in AOL's Explore America program, in partnership with U.S. Travel Association. The program encouraged web users to select the greatest wonders of the United States by casting their votes online. RACVB worked with the Coronado and other partners to promote the contest through local and regional media, and coordinate an online and social media strategy that would rally the community to support our "crown jewel."

"It's been really exciting to watch the way the community has reacted to this campaign," said RACVB Marketing Coordinator Mika Doyle. "You could see the votes jump in response to tweets, Facebook postings and media coverage. People were really eager to get involved and show their support for the Coronado and our community. This just proves people in Rockford value what this community has to offer."

"Special appreciation for this honor really goes to the more than 6,500 people who cast their vote for the Coronado; to the Rockford Area Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Rockford Register Star for spearheading the campaign of support for the theater; and, once again, to the City of Rockford, the visionary leaders and the countless businesses, private donors and supporters whose efforts secured the survival of the Coronado and continue to help ensure its future," said Michael Goldberg, executive director of the Coronado Performing Arts Center.

1 Splash Orange liqueur (Cointreau, Grand Marnier or Triple Sec )

Makes one cocktail. Combine all ingredients over a glass of ice. Garnish with a lime wedge and salt (or sugar) if you'd like.

Mix lemon juice, sugar and vodka in a martini shaker filled with ice. Shake well and pour into sugar-rimmed martini glass. Garnish with mint.
