Covering four generations of continuous service, Der Rathskeller represents two families who have been providing good German food and drink to residents and visitors of Rockford alike. Betty Giesen, with her husband Dick and her son Michael DuPre, have owned Der Rathskeller since 1976. In 1996, the old deli cases were taken out and replaced with a European bar for customers to enjoy a cold beer or drink before or after a meal. In 2000, a devastating fire closed the restaurant for 9 months. With the city's help, the restaurant was rebuilt while keeping the Old World atmosphere. An outdoor Bier Garden, which seats an additional 100 customers, was added in 2009. We hope that you enjoy yourself during your visit with us and will try some of our new dishes from time to time.

Did you know that we manufacture our own sausages? All of our sausages are made from the finest quality and the leanest government inspected pork and beef. You are invited to take some home - - just stop by our delicatessen. We also carry Usinger's famous sausages, which we've been serving for decades now. The oldest restaurant in Rockford in it's original location is proud to serve the customers in the Rockford area and carry-on this fine tradition.
